As India observes the 50th anniversary of the Emergency (1975–1977), Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the Congress government’s move to suspend democracy, calling it a dark chapter in India’s constitutional history.
PM Modi emphasized that his government remains firmly committed to upholding democratic values, freedom of expression, and institutional integrity, contrasting it with the authoritarian actions taken during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The Emergency, declared on June 25, 1975, saw mass arrests, press censorship, and civil liberties suspended, sparking widespread national and global criticism.
