GUWAHATI — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a solemn visit to Nazira on Wednesday to meet the family of Rideep Panika, a young student whose fatal leap into swirling floodwaters to save his dog has emerged as a poignant symbol of devotion amidst the state’s worsening flood crisis.
Offering condolences directly to Panika’s grieving parents, Sarma paid tribute to the boy’s extraordinary courage. Rideep had plunged into a raging torrent after discovering his pet dog, Barun, trapped in the current. Though the boy managed to haul the animal to safety, the fierce pull of the floodwaters overpowered him, preventing his own escape.

Rideep’s death highlights the human cost of a sharp escalation in monsoon severity across central Assam. Incessant rainfall over the past 48 hours across the border in neighboring Bhutan has sent high volumes of runoff pouring into the rivers of Assam’s border districts.
In Orang, the Pagladia River swelled rapidly without warning, spilling over its embankments and inundating dozens of rural settlements. The adjacent district of Udalguri has been similarly battered, with swift-moving waters sweeping through several communities:

The sheer velocity of the floodwaters has disrupted local transportation networks, collapsing key arterial roads, washing out earthen embankments, and severing communications.
In Kathpuri, all major access routes have been completely swept away, leaving the village fully isolated from surrounding rescue channels. District disaster management personnel are working to re-establish access routes, assess crop destruction, and deliver emergency relief as weather authorities keep river levels under close observation across the region.
