NEW DELHI — Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday lashed out at tech giant Meta after his social media account was restricted from being viewed in India, accusing the company of yielding to political pressure and delivering “pretty bad service.”
Sharing a screenshot of his account status displaying an “unavailable in some locations” notice, the former Delhi Chief Minister stated that verbal inquiries made to Meta’s India office confirmed the geo-restriction within the country.
“Why have you restricted my account? Verbal enquiries at your India office revealed that my account has been restricted in India and is unavailable in India. Why? No one in your office is giving any reasons. No one is suggesting how restrictions can be removed,” Kejriwal posted on X. He further took a swipe at the central government, adding: “Don’t bow down to our Prime Minister so much. Else he will allow u to run only his own account in India.”
Kejriwal alleged that written communications sent to Meta yielded only automated acknowledgements without any concrete explanation or timeline for lifting the restriction.
Meta has not yet issued an official statement regarding Kejriwal’s allegations.
The friction comes amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of Meta in India, its largest market by users. Just a day prior, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan personally apologized to Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw after an operational glitch led to the brief restriction of a post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook.
