NEW DELHI — In a stern rebuff aimed squarely at opposition narratives while hailing the nation’s economic endurance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India’s latest 7.8% GDP growth for the April–June quarter has effectively silenced the “echo of lies” (jhooth ki goonj) being circulated by critics.
Addressing the country via a video statement from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan—where he is currently attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit—the Prime Minister pointed to the strong economic figures as tangible proof of collective national resolve operating amidst severe global headwinds.
Economic Resilience Amidst Global Instability
The 7.8% growth rate in Q1 of Fiscal Year 2027 outstripped market expectations and cleared the Reserve Bank of India’s projected 7.0% forecast, firmly cementing India’s position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. The strong showing comes despite prolonged supply chain disruptions, energy market volatility stemming from the Middle East conflict, and residual post-pandemic turbulence.
“From the Covid era in 2020 till today, stability is not visible anywhere. The world is drowned in war; there is news of conflict all around. Despite that, India is progressing at a fast pace,” PM Modi remarked, crediting the citizens’ hard work and collective power for the achievement.
| Key Growth Indicators | Data Point |

The Political Crossfire: ‘Jhooth Ki Goonj’
The Prime Minister’s choice of words carried sharp political undertones. The phrase “jhooth ki goonj” directly referenced recent counter-campaigns targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ initiative. BJP strategists have frequently leveraged the phrase to claim that opposition assertions regarding economic distress and unemployment lack factual grounding.
Without naming specific leaders, PM Modi observed that individuals “drowned in the depths of despair” were attempting to sow narrative confusion, but noted that the official economic metrics had successfully cut through the rhetoric.
Renewed Push for ‘Swadeshi’ and Domestic Capital
Looking ahead to the target of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047, PM Modi reiterated the need for structural self-reliance through the principles of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Swadeshi, and Vocal for Local.
He urged citizens to channel discretionary spending internally to protect national capital reserves:
-
Domestic Tourism: Prioritizing local travel destinations over foreign trips.
-
Wed in India: Encouraging families to hold grand celebrations and destination weddings within the country.
-
Capital Retention: Exercising prudence on non-essential foreign imports, including gold.
While growth moderated slightly from the 8.6% expansion recorded in the preceding quarter, the strong first-quarter baseline provides significant fiscal runway for the rest of the fiscal year, signaling that India’s underlying domestic demand remains remarkably insulated from external volatility.
