NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has joined world leaders in praising Indian commercial aviator Captain Smit Machchhar, calling him a hero whose decisive bravery averted an aviation catastrophe aboard a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv.
Despite suffering severe injuries after being stabbed by his co-pilot during a mid-flight sabotage attempt, Captain Machchhar successfully fought off the attacker and unlocked the cockpit door, enabling crew members and passengers to overpower the assailant.
National Pride and Diplomatic Support
Praising the pilot’s fortitude in a public statement on X, Prime Minister Modi highlighted Machchhar’s selflessness under extreme physical distress:
“Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO. In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy. India is proud of Captain Machchhar.”
The Prime Minister reached out to Machchhar’s family directly, assuring them that Indian diplomatic missions are facilitating every necessary assistance during his hospitalization. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also commended Machchhar’s presence of mind, joining international prayers for his swift recovery.
Drama in the Sky: How the Sabotage Was Foiled
The crisis erupted at cruising altitude when the co-pilot attempted to crash the Boeing 737, forcing the aircraft into a steep, alarming descent from 34,000 feet.
As Captain Machchhar moved to regain control of the flight systems, the co-pilot attacked him with a sharp object. Despite sustaining grievous wounds, Machchhar resisted the assault and manually unlatched the armored cockpit door, signaling for assistance.
-
Cabin Intervention: Prompted by the open door, passengers and off-duty crew members rushed the cockpit to overpower the attacker.
-
Diversion to Safety: Two off-roster relief pilots seated in the cabin took over the controls, steering the aircraft to an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
-
In-Flight Medical Assistance: A dentist traveling on board provided crucial emergency medical treatment to Machchhar, stabilizing his wounds prior to landing.
-
Extensive Experience: Machchhar, an industry veteran with over 9,750 flying hours, previously served with SpiceJet for ten years before joining flydubai as a line training captain four years ago.
Global Leaders Express Gratitude
The Indian aviator’s extraordinary resilience drew praise from international heads of state:
-
Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended Machchhar’s action in saving 174 lives—including several Israeli nationals—describing him as a “true hero.”
-
United States: U.S. President Donald Trump lauded the pilot’s presence of mind under life-threatening conditions while condemning the co-pilot’s dangerous actions.
Both Captain Machchhar and his assailant received immediate medical attention upon touchdown in Saudi Arabia, while the remaining passengers were subsequently flown safely to Ben Gurion Airport in Israel.
