PUDUCHERRY — Marking a major shift in the regional political landscape, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has announced it will contest the upcoming Puducherry Legislative Assembly elections independently.
The party released its full list of 30 candidates on Sunday, signaling a direct challenge to established alliances. The elections are scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
Key Election Dynamics:
-
The Challenger: This marks Vijay’s official electoral debut. By going solo, TVK aims to disrupt the traditional hold of the AINRC, DMK, and BJP in the Union Territory.
-
The Incumbents: The BJP has already announced nine candidates as part of its alliance with the All India NR Congress (AINRC). Key BJP contenders include A Namassivayam (Mannadipet) and Embalam R Selvam (Manavely).
-
Opposition Shifts: The Congress party recently gained momentum as independent MLA M Sivasankar joined its ranks ahead of the polls.
With the current assembly term ending on June 15, the entry of TVK as a standalone force adds a fresh layer of unpredictability to a contest historically dominated by narrow margins.
