GUWAHATI – A fresh political controversy has erupted in the ongoing Assam election campaign as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma leveled serious allegations against Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury and her mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury.
Speaking in Khowang, the Chief Minister raised concerns over the candidate’s background and social media activity, which he described as “hurtful to sentiments.”
Key Allegations:
-
Religious Sentiments: Sarma claimed that Sujata Gurung Chowdhury had posted Instagram photos of consuming beef and made remarks that allegedly challenged Sanatan Dharma, including controversial references to Lord Krishna.
-
National Security Concerns: The Chief Minister further alleged that the candidate’s mother had expressed online support for individuals like Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, and had endorsed statements regarding the sensitive “chicken’s neck” corridor.
-
AJP’s Selection: Sarma questioned the AJP’s decision to field a candidate whose family members allegedly hold views contrary to the state’s cultural and security interests.
The Candidate’s Response
Kunki Chowdhury, the youngest candidate in the Assam polls, dismissed the allegations as entirely false and a sign of political desperation.
-
“False Allegations”: In a social media post, Chowdhury stated that the Chief Minister’s remarks were a reaction to the overwhelming support she has received in the Central Guwahati constituency.
-
Election Narrative: She suggested that the ruling party has “accepted defeat” in her constituency and is resorting to personal attacks just 15 days after her entry into politics.
The exchange marks an intensifying war of words in the battle for Central Guwahati, as both sides leverage social media history and cultural identity to sway voters ahead of the 2026 state assembly elections.
