Amid a stark threat from US President Donald Trump to impose a steep 155% tariff on Chinese imports starting November 1 if a trade deal isn’t reached, Beijing has responded by urging Washington to “correct this mistake” and engage in dialogue.
Xu Wei, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata, issued a firm warning, stating, “We do not want this conflict. But if we are pushed, we will respond, definitely. We will fight if we must.” He stressed that China’s doors remain open for talks, emphasizing that “cooperation benefits both sides. Confrontation hurts everyone.”
Trump’s Tariff Threat
President Trump reiterated his stance, claiming Beijing is already paying “tremendous amounts of money” due to the existing 55% tariffs levied on Chinese goods, and that a potential 155% tariff could be applied next month. He asserted that many countries previously took advantage of the US, but “they are not able to take advantage anymore.”
India-China Cooperation
The Chinese Consul General also commented on the shifting geopolitical landscape, noting that cooperation between India and China could be mutually beneficial, suggesting that both governments should discuss how to use current challenges to their advantage.
