GUWAHATI (Feb 17, 2026) — A high-level delegation from the Election Commission of India (ECI), led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, has arrived in Assam for a crucial three-day assessment ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Accompanied by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, the team is reviewing the state’s readiness for the polls, expected to take place in March or April.
Strategic Review & Logistics
The Commission’s agenda covers the full spectrum of electoral management:
-
Political Dialogue: Consultations with various political parties to ensure a level playing field and address stakeholder concerns.
-
Security & Infrastructure: Detailed reviews of law and order, security force deployment, and the functionality of EVMs and VVPATs.
-
Geographic Challenges: Special focus on riverine and remote polling stations in flood-prone and border areas.
Voter Data & Reforms
The visit follows the publication of the final voter list for 2026, which recorded 2.49 crore eligible voters across 126 constituencies—a slight decrease from the initial draft figures. The EC is also evaluating measures to curb “money and muscle power” and enhance turnout through ongoing electoral reforms.
Looking Ahead
The current term of the Assam Legislative Assembly ends on May 20. The CEC is scheduled to address a press conference on Wednesday to provide a final summary of the state’s election readiness.
