Elon Musk, the billionaire tech entrepreneur and former key donor to Donald Trump, has announced the formation of a new political party — the America Party — aiming to break what he describes as the “one-party system” dominating U.S. politics.
In a sharp break from Trump, Musk criticized the president’s massive domestic spending plan, warning it would skyrocket national debt, and pledged to challenge lawmakers who supported it. As the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk was once one of Trump’s closest allies but has since become one of his fiercest critics.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X, the social platform he owns.
The Birth of the America Party
The America Party, according to Musk, is a direct response to what he calls the “uniparty rule” — a blend of Democratic and Republican leadership that fails to serve the public. To support his stance, he posted a poll on Independence Day asking Americans whether they wanted to break free from the two-party system.
Over 1.2 million people responded, with a 2:1 majority in favor of a new party.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk declared.
He also shared a meme of a two-headed snake labeled “End the Uniparty”, symbolizing his dissatisfaction with both major parties.
Trump-Musk Rift Intensifies
Tensions between Musk and Trump peaked following the passage of the president’s One Big Beautiful Bill, a spending package that Musk claims adds $3.4 trillion to the national deficit.
“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk warned about lawmakers who supported the bill.
In response, Trump reportedly threatened to deport Musk, citing his South African birth and suggesting he may strip Musk’s companies of federal funding.
Musk’s 2026 Strategy
Musk outlined a targeted political strategy, suggesting that the America Party could focus on flipping 2–3 Senate seats and 8–10 House districts to become a deciding force in Congress.
“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just a few vulnerable districts,” he wrote.
While the impact of the America Party on upcoming elections remains uncertain, political analysts warn of vote-splitting, referencing Ross Perot’s 1992 campaign, which helped Democrat Bill Clinton defeat George H.W. Bush.
“You are pulling a Ross Perot, and I don’t like it,” one user posted in response.
As Musk dives deeper into political activism, his new party could dramatically reshape the landscape of American politics in the years to come.
