The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India has appointed Gaurav Banerjee, Managing Director & CEO of Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), as its new Chairman, effective immediately. The announcement followed a board meeting held on August 1, 2025.
Banerjee succeeds Shashi Sinha, Executive Chairman of IPG Mediabrands India, who served as Chairman since March 2022. A seasoned media executive, Banerjee also serves as Vice President of the Indian Broadcasting & Digital Foundation (IBDF) and sits on the boards of MSM-Worldwide Factual Media Pvt Ltd and Bangla Entertainment Pvt Ltd.
Speaking on his appointment, Banerjee said, “It is a privilege to take on the role of Chairman at the world’s largest television audience measurement company. BARC continues to empower stakeholders through data-driven decision-making, and I look forward to strengthening its position as a trusted and credible currency for TV measurement in India.”
Outgoing Chairman Shashi Sinha thanked the BARC team for their support and expressed confidence in Banerjee’s leadership. “With his unique style and deep industry insight, Gaurav is well-positioned to guide BARC into its next phase of growth,” he noted.
BARC India CEO Nakul Chopra welcomed the transition, stating, “Gaurav’s leadership will be invaluable as BARC evolves to serve the broadcast and advertising ecosystem. We also extend our deepest gratitude to Shashi Sinha for his impactful tenure.”
This leadership change comes at a pivotal time as BARC navigates a rapidly evolving media and measurement landscape in India.
