VIENNA — Amidst ongoing military action, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that there are currently no indications of damage to Iran’s nuclear installations.
IAEA Chief Rafael Mariano Grossi addressed a special session of the Board of Governors today, providing a critical update on the status of facilities including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the Tehran Research Reactor.
Radiation Monitoring and Safety Status
Despite the “relentless bombing” of various targets, the UN nuclear watchdog reports that environmental safety remains stable across the region.
-
Radiation Levels: No elevation above normal background levels has been detected in Iran or its neighboring countries.
-
Facility Integrity: All known nuclear research reactors and fuel storage sites appear to be intact “up to now.”
-
Communication Gaps: Grossi noted that the IAEA has made repeated attempts to contact Iranian nuclear authorities, but has received no response due to conflict-related communication disruptions.
A Call for Military Restraint
The IAEA Chief issued a stern warning regarding the escalating threat to nuclear safety in the Middle East, highlighting that the region is home to several operational plants and sensitive fuel sites.
“I reiterate my call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation,” Grossi stated, emphasizing the catastrophic risks associated with a direct hit on nuclear infrastructure.
