In a sharp rebuttal, India has condemned US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports over its continued purchase of Russian oil, calling the move “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
In an official statement released this evening, the Ministry of External Affairs stated:
“The United States has in recent days targeted India’s oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear that our imports are based on market factors and aimed at ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion Indians. It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest.”
India emphasized that it will “take all actions necessary to protect national interests.”
The calm but firm response marks a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Washington, as global energy politics continues to evolve amid the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine war.
