Mehul Goswami, a 39-year-old Indian-origin resident of New York, has been arrested by US authorities on charges of “grand larceny” for allegedly working a second, full-time job while employed by the New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS).
A joint investigation by the New York State Inspector General’s Office and the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office concluded that Goswami’s conduct constituted the misuse of approximately $50,000 in taxpayer money.
Allegations of Dual Employment
Goswami was reportedly working remotely for ITS, but simultaneously began working as a contractor for the semiconductor company GlobalFoundries in Malta starting in March 2022. The investigation was reportedly triggered by an anonymous email alleging he was working for a private employer during state work hours.
Inspector General Lucy Lang stated that Goswami’s alleged actions were a “serious breach of trust” and an “abuse of public resources.”
Legal Proceedings
On October 15, Goswami was arrested for grand larceny in the second degree, a serious Class C felony in New York that carries a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison. He was subsequently released without bail by Judge James A Fauci at the Malta Town Court, as the specific charges do not qualify for mandatory bail under updated New York state law.
Goswami earned $117,891 in salary from the state in 2024. His case has reportedly reignited the public debate surrounding the practice of moonlighting in remote employment.
