Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has strongly condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks claiming he saved Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei from an “ugly and ignominious death.” Araghchi called the comments “disrespectful and unacceptable”, urging Trump to adopt a more respectful tone if he is serious about diplomacy.
> “If President Trump is genuine about wanting a deal, he should stop insulting our Supreme Leader and hurting millions of his supporters,” Araghchi posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The statement came in response to Trump’s post on Truth Social, in which he claimed to have prevented Israeli or U.S. forces from targeting Khamenei during the recent U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. These strikes aligned with Israel’s offensive during a 12-day conflict that began on June 13.
> “I saved him from a very ugly and ignominious death… and he does not even say thank you,” Trump wrote, also claiming he was working on sanction relief for Iran — but halted the effort following Iran’s hostile response.
Araghchi reiterated that Iran has no plans to resume nuclear negotiations with the United States, countering Trump’s claim that talks would restart next week.
The exchange marks a further deterioration in U.S.-Iran relations, already strained by recent military action, stalled diplomacy, and escalating rhetoric on both sides.
