New Delhi | April 10, 2026 — In a historic shift for Bihar’s political landscape, the state’s longest-serving Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) supremo, Nitish Kumar, is scheduled to take his oath as a Member of the Rajya Sabha today in the national capital.
The move marks a significant transition for the veteran leader, who has been a dominant figure in Bihar politics for over two decades. His shift to the Upper House comes after he officially resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) on March 30, following his successful election to the Rajya Sabha.
NDA High Command Converges in Delhi
The gravity of the occasion was underscored by the arrival of Bihar’s top leadership in New Delhi. Both Deputy Chief Ministers, Vijay Kumar Sinha and Samrat Choudhary, reached the capital yesterday and are expected to be present for the swearing-in ceremony.
Their presence, alongside central leadership, signals a unified front as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) navigates this major leadership transition.
Succession and Alliance Stability
As Nitish Kumar prepares to take his seat in the Rajya Sabha, questions regarding the next Chief Minister of Bihar have taken center stage. However, BJP President Nitin Nabin moved to dispel any rumors of internal friction within the alliance.
In an interview with ANI, Nabin emphasized that the transition is part of a structured and agreed-upon schedule.
“There are no differences anywhere; everything is proceeding as per schedule. Nitish Kumar is taking the oath of office in the Rajya Sabha on the 10th. BJP has always respected the gathbandhan dharma, and that is why parties trust us even today,” Nabin stated.
A Look Back at a Storied Career
Nitish Kumar leaves behind a monumental legacy in Bihar. His political journey began as an MLA in 1985, eventually leading him to the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Since first assuming the Chief Minister’s office in 2005, he has steered the state through multiple terms, earning a reputation as one of India’s most experienced and seasoned administrators.
While the “Mahagathbandhan” and NDA dynamics continue to evolve, today’s oath-taking marks the beginning of a new chapter for Kumar on the national stage, leaving the path clear for a new leadership era in Patna.
