While speaking to the media aboard Air Force One before his Asia visit, US President Donald Trump once again took credit for resolving global conflicts, specifically mentioning the ceasefire between India and Pakistan earlier this year. Trump suggested that ending the India-Pakistan dispute was potentially harder than resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which he called the “most challenging conflict to solve.”
India-Pakistan Conflict Stance
Trump repeatedly claimed he secured a “full and immediate” ceasefire between the nuclear-armed neighbours, implying his efforts were key to stopping hostilities. However, India has consistently rejected this claim, maintaining that the pause in fighting was agreed upon through direct talks without any third-party mediation.
Russian Oil Claims Repeated
The President also reiterated his assertion that India is stopping its purchases of Russian oil by the end of the year, a factor he linked to his earlier tariff threats. Trump claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him of this cutback. This claim has also been denied by India, which states its priority is safeguarding domestic consumer interests amid volatile energy markets.
Upcoming Asia Visit and Putin Meeting
Trump mentioned he would discuss China’s Russian oil purchases with Xi Jinping during their talks in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit. Regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump stated he would not hold a meeting unless there is a “deal on Ukraine ceasefire,” dismissing time with Putin otherwise, despite claiming Putin had praised his peace brokerage efforts in other regions like Azerbaijan and Armenia.
