US President Donald Trump has reignited global trade tensions by announcing a wave of new tariff threats against 14 countries, with duties as high as 40%. The highest rates were imposed on Myanmar and Laos, both facing 40% tariffs, while Thailand and Cambodia follow closely at 36%.
Trump stated that while he remains open to negotiations, the August 1 deadline to finalize trade deals is “not 100% firm”, offering flexibility if countries continue discussions and offer concessions.
The list of countries and tariffs announced:
Laos, Myanmar – 40%
Thailand, Cambodia – 36%
Bangladesh, Serbia – 35%
Indonesia – 32%
South Africa, Bosnia & Herzegovina – 30%
Malaysia, Tunisia, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan – 25%
Trump emphasized that retaliatory tariffs from these nations would be met with equal or greater reciprocal increases. However, Japan and South Korea were warned directly that any increase in their tariffs would add on top of the already announced 25%, potentially bringing Japanese vehicle tariffs to 50%.
Trade deals have only been finalized with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, while talks with India are reportedly close to conclusion.
Despite the aggressive stance, Trump said, “We’re not going to be unfair,” signaling willingness for adjustments based on ongoing diplomatic talks. An executive order signed Monday extends the negotiation window until August 1.
