TIRUCHIRAPPALLI — Union Minister Piyush Goyal has issued a strong assurance that India faces “absolutely no shortage of fuel,” despite escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia that have rattled global energy markets.
Addressing the media, the Minister emphasized that the government is maintaining a 24/7 vigil on the evolving situation to safeguard domestic supply chains and ensure uninterrupted energy access for citizens.
Strategic Market Stabilization
To counter potential disruptions, the Union Government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act (EC Act). This move empowers the Petroleum Ministry to implement a strictly prioritized distribution framework:
-
Top Priority: 100% supply is guaranteed for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for households and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for transport.
-
LPG Maximization: Refineries have been ordered to divert hydrocarbon streams to maximize cooking gas production.
-
Industrial Calibration: Supply to tea processing units and general manufacturing has been capped at 80% of their six-month average.
-
Fertilizer Sector: Allotted 70% of previous average consumption to balance essential needs.
Navigating Logistical Hurdles
The proactive measures come as India manages a 35% reduction in natural gas supply from refineries to prioritize essential domestic pools. This rebalancing acts as a buffer against logistics challenges in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor for 30% of India’s natural gas imports currently impacted by the regional conflict.
Government departments are currently exploring alternative trade routes and diversified procurement sources to maintain long-term energy security while the conflict persists.
