JAMMU — Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has raised serious concerns regarding a major security lapse following an assassination attempt on his father, Farooq Abdullah, on Wednesday evening.
Despite being a Z-Plus protectee under the care of National Security Guard (NSG) commandos and local police, an armed individual managed to reach point-blank range of the 88-year-old former Chief Minister during a wedding in Jammu.
Details of the Incident:
-
The Attack: A man identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, 65, approached Farooq Abdullah and discharged a shot from a licensed pistol.
-
Security Intervention: The close protection team successfully deflected the shot, preventing any injury to the senior leader.
-
The Suspect: Jamwal, a resident of Jammu’s Purani Mandi, was arrested immediately. According to police sources, he claimed he had been “waiting for this moment” for 20 years.
-
CCTV Evidence: Footage shows the attacker closely following the leader before pulling the trigger, only to be blocked by a commando at the critical moment.
Call for Accountability:
Taking to social media, Omar Abdullah questioned how a person with a loaded weapon could infiltrate the highest level of civilian security in the country. “There are more questions than answers at the moment,” the Chief Minister stated, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the breach.
Farooq Abdullah, who has survived multiple targeted attacks in the past, was unharmed. Authorities are currently investigating the suspect’s motives and the breakdown in the security perimeter.
