GOTHENBURG: Marking his first visit to the Nordic nation since 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Sweden for a high-profile two-day diplomatic visit. The trip comes at the official invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and underscores India’s accelerating strategic push into Europe.
The bilateral talks, scheduled across May 17 and 18, will center on critical frontier sectors, including green energy transition, artificial intelligence, resilient supply chains, and aerospace cooperation.
The Bilateral & Strategic Agenda
The discussions between PM Modi and PM Kristersson are set to cover the full spectrum of India-Sweden relations, with a heavy emphasis on co-innovation and security:
-
The Green Transition: Deepening ties via the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), a joint India-Sweden climate initiative targeting net-zero industrial emissions.
-
Tech & Space Ecosystems: Formulating joint frameworks in AI deployment, quantum computing, satellite tracking, and deep-tech research.
-
Geopolitical Headwinds: According to official sources, the leaders are also expected to evaluate global macroeconomic stability and the cascading economic fallout of ongoing geopolitical conflicts, including the Iran-US standoff, on maritime trade routes.
Strengthening the Indo-Nordic Investment Corridor
Economic engagement forms the cornerstone of this state visit. Alongside formal diplomatic channels, both prime ministers will address a joint round of business leaders and industry captains to pitch India’s Make in India manufacturing push.
Sweden has increasingly emerged as one of India’s premier European partners for high-tech manufacturing, startup acceleration, and defense systems. This visit is viewed as a vital lever to build executive momentum for the ongoing India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.
