CHANDIGARH — In a bid to shift the political narrative ahead of upcoming state electoral contests, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and Member of Parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal has publicly reiterated an apology for desecration incidents during her party’s past tenure, while simultaneously launching a sharp offensive against the governing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Indian National Congress.
Addressing a gathering in Sangrur organized to mark the death anniversary of former Akali leader Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, Kaur reflected on the political backlash SAD faced following past sacrilege incidents in Punjab, framing her party’s position as one of ongoing regret alongside a pledge to seek justice.
Shifting Focus to Opposition and Incumbent Record
Attempting to turn an issue that heavily impacted SAD in previous assembly polls into a critique of current governance, Kaur questioned the AAP administration’s progress on delivering swift results in desecration cases.
-
Apology & Accountability: Kaur acknowledged the single major beadbi (sacrilege) event occurring under SAD governance, stating her party remains committed to seeing perpetrators penalized.
-
Critique of AAP: The MP highlighted over 600 reported sacrilege incidents across the state over the past decade, questioning Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his administration on their commitments to resolve these cases within specified timelines.
-
Public Outreach: Unlike the severe public demonstrations SAD encountered during its time in government, Kaur noted that current leadership continues to hold political functions unimpeded despite ongoing controversies.
Political Strategy Ahead of Future Contests
The Shiromani Akali Dal‘s refreshed positioning reflects an effort to re-engage voters on an issue that contributed to its electoral defeats in 2017 and 2022. By combining an explicit apology with questions regarding the incumbent government’s record, SAD aims to benchmark all political parties against the same standards of accountability.
Whether voters across Punjab will reconsider their perspective on SAD’s past governance or hold the current administration to account remains a central topic in the state’s evolving political landscape.
