NEW DELHI — As the opposition INDIA bloc attempts to recalibrate its strategy following structural electoral setbacks, visible fault lines have emerged between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) regarding a potential electoral pact with Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM for the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
The division highlights contrasting pragmatic and ideological approaches within the anti-BJP coalition as it looks to regain momentum in India’s politically most crucial state.
Opposing Stances Within the INDIA Bloc
1. Congress: No Compromise on “Communalism”
The Congress party has adopted a highly cautious, leadership-centric approach to the prospect of onboarding AIMIM, framing the national political landscape as a binary battle.
-
The Leadership Directive: Congress MP Imran Masood stated that while final alliance calls rest with the high command, the party remains firm against accommodating what it views as divisive politics.
-
The Structural Viewpoint: “It will not be possible to oppose communalism on one side and strengthen communalism on the other,” Masood remarked, asserting that those committed to defeating the ruling party must consolidate behind Rahul Gandhi rather than seeking a middle ground.
2. Samajwadi Party: A Pragmatic Arithmetic
In contrast, the Samajwadi Party—the principal opposition force on the ground in Uttar Pradesh—indicated a willingness to prioritize electoral math over strict ideological filtering.
-
Broad Coalition Strategy: Senior SP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav left the door open for tactical arrangements, offering a simpler benchmark for potential partners: “Whoever defeats the BJP is welcome.”
Owaisi’s Terms for Engagement
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi publicly confirmed his readiness to join a broader opposition front to halt the BJP’s momentum in Uttar Pradesh, though he attached clear conditions to any potential pact.
-
Respect and Parity: Owaisi emphasized that AIMIM is willing to form an alliance provided the party is treated with “respect and accorded equal status” by the larger regional and national players.
-
The 2022 Baseline: The outreach comes as AIMIM looks to improve upon its 2022 UP Assembly performance, where it anchored the Bhagidari Parivartan Morcha coalition, contesting 94 seats but failing to secure a victory, finishing with a 0.49% vote share.
Context: Regrouping After Regional Setbacks
The internal debate follows a high-level review meeting in Delhi where Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi urged alliance partners to stay united despite recent electoral defeats across Delhi, Bihar, and West Bengal.
Addressing leaders from the SP, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Gandhi warned that conventional campaign methodologies are no longer viable due to an uneven political playing field, asserting that the Congress is prepared to bear the brunt of the political struggle to keep the alliance intact.
