NEW DELHI — In an official address directly preceding the commencement of the annual Himalayan pilgrimage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a special letter to devotees embarking on the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir.
Describing the journey to the holy cave shrine as an enduring testament to India’s unity in diversity, the Prime Minister called upon pilgrims to transform their spiritual voyage into a civic mission anchored in environmental conservation, local economic support, and the national vision of Viksit Bharat.
The Five Pledges for Pilgrims
The core of the Prime Minister’s message features a distinct mandate comprising five socio-environmental commitments designed to ensure a clean, safe, and sustainable pilgrimage:
-
1. Cleanliness (Swachhata): Maintaining rigorous personal hygiene and actively keeping the high-altitude mountain trails, camp sites, and water bodies free from waste and plastic pollution.
-
2. Administrative Adherence: Exercising strict compliance with safety advisories, traffic regulations, and medical guidelines issued by security agencies and the local administration to navigate hazardous, weather-sensitive terrain.
-
3. Economic Support (Vocal for Local): Pledging to spend at least 10% of their total travel expenditure on local products, handicrafts, and services to directly boost the livelihoods of local families and youth across Jammu and Kashmir.
-
4. Ecological Conservation: Participating in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative by planting or gifting a tree sapling, aligning with the conclusion of the Yatra on Raksha Bandhan.
-
5. National Duty (Nation First): Translating the spiritual discipline of the pilgrimage into year-round civic duty and dedication toward building a developed nation.
Commending Local & Security Infrastructure
The Prime Minister’s letter extended deep institutional recognition to the joint task forces managing the logistical complexities of the high-altitude yatra. He lauded the multi-agency coordination deployed to ensure seamless movement and safety:
-
Administrative Stewardship: The long-standing efficiency of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) and the Jammu & Kashmir civil administration.
-
Security & Emergency Services: The continuous deployment of the Indian Army, CRPF, Jammu & Kashmir Police, ITBP, BSF, NDRF, alongside dedicated teams of healthcare professionals, doctors, and sanitation workers.
-
Grassroots Providers: The invaluable contribution of local pony operators, porters, and palanquin bearers, whose grueling physical labor on the mountain tracks embodies the spirit of selfless service.
Bilateral Outlook on Faith and Governance
The annual pilgrimage, which draws hundreds of thousands of devotees to the naturally formed ice Shivling, is progressing under a heavily fortified security umbrella and advanced tracking systems.
“I pray that Baba Amarnath’s infinite blessings remain with all of us,” PM Modi noted. “May this pilgrimage fill your lives with renewed energy and inspire every devotee to be more dedicated to their duties, fulfilling our collective resolve for a Viksit Bharat.”
