NEW DELHI — Escalating his attack on the Union Government, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Testing Agency (NTA) following the cancellation and rescheduling of the UGC-NET examinations for three major subjects.
The NTA announced that tests conducted in June for English, Commerce, and Sociology would be held fresh in September after a review committee confirmed serious flaws in the question papers—including typographical errors, mistranslations, incorrect scholar names, and repeated questions from past years.
Key Highlights of Gandhi’s Critique
-
“NTA Makes the Mistake, Student Serves the Sentence”: Targeting PM Modi directly in a post on X, Gandhi highlighted the ordeal faced by thousands of candidates forced to re-appear for tests after months of preparation and travel.
-
Education System as an “Extraction Machine”: Describing the current academic infrastructure as deeply compromised, Gandhi asserted that the system extracts students’ time, money, and mental health without offering accountability or secure employment.
-
Demand for NTA Leadership Accountability: Gandhi stated that the previous resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was merely a first step. He demanded strict action against top NTA officials and questioned whether the papers had been leaked prior to the exams.
Details of the UGC-NET Retest Schedule
-
Affected Subjects: English, Commerce, and Sociology (out of 87 overall subjects conducted in the June cycle).
-
Rescheduled Dates: The retests for English and Commerce are slated for September 9, while the Sociology exam will take place on September 10.
-
No Additional Fee: Candidates appearing for the retest will not be charged any extra fee, and results for the remaining 84 subjects will be declared as scheduled.
