NEW DELHI — In a sudden shake-up to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s media wing, national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has formally resigned from all party posts and primary membership, bringing an end to weeks of intense political speculation surrounding his organizational status.
Poonawalla, a quintessential face of the ruling party across high-decibel television news debates, confirmed that he resubmitted his resignation letter to BJP National President Nitin Nabin, pressing for an immediate release from his duties.
A Departure in Two Acts
The resignation marks the culmination of a weeks-long internal deliberation. Poonawalla had initially tendered his resignation on July 30, only for the party leadership to decline it and ask him to reconsider his decision. Soon after, he quietly dropped “BJP National Spokesperson” from his official profile on X (formerly Twitter), retaining only his self-description as a “lifelong follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
In his latest communication, the 38-year-old leader revealed that while the party’s warmth in rejecting his initial attempt was touching, subsequent developments left him with no alternative.
“The events of the last few days, courtesy certain individuals about whom I have told you in great detail, have forced me to reinforce and stand by my earlier decision,” Poonawalla stated in his letter, hinting at underlying interpersonal friction within organizational ranks without publicly naming specific individuals.
Transition to the Private Sector
In his farewell note, Poonawalla attributed his exit to urgent real-world imperatives, explicitly citing “pressing emergency financial and personal circumstances.” He announced plans to transition into the private sector, while emphasizing that his personal convictions remain unchanged.
“I am only leaving the Vyavastha (organisation), not the Vyakti (people) or Vichar (ideology),” he noted, reiterating that he will continue to support the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in whatever independent capacity possible.
He expressed deep gratitude toward top party brass, including PM Modi, Party President Nitin Nabin, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh, thanking them for the national platform provided to him over his five-year tenure.
From Congress Dissident to BJP TV Face
Poonawalla’s political career has been defined by high-profile ideological shifts. A lawyer by training, he initially made headlines in 2017 while serving within the Indian National Congress, when he publicly challenged the party’s internal presidential election, calling it “rigged” in favor of Rahul Gandhi.
After parting ways with the Congress, Poonawalla formally joined the BJP, quickly ascending through the ranks to become one of its most combative and prominent media representatives.
While the BJP leadership has not issued an official commentary on his final exit, his departure leaves a noticeable void in the party’s daily communication strategy on prime-time news panels.
