A high-powered government committee constituted to examine the legal entitlements, welfare access, and protection against discrimination for queer couples has met only twice since its formation, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Responding to a written query from MP Shashi Tharoor on August 4, 2026, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment BL Verma confirmed that the panel’s last recorded full meeting took place nearly two years ago, on August 22, 2024. No completion timeline or deadline has been set for submitting its final report.
