LUCKNOW — In a major strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Congress party has appointed three-time MLA Aradhana Misra ‘Mona’ as the new president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC).
The political reshuffle, coming roughly six months ahead of crucial poll negotiations, aims to balance regional caste dynamics while bridging rift lines with main opposition ally Samajwadi Party (SP).
Strategic Caste Balancing and Leadership Structure
Misra—a prominent Brahmin leader and daughter of senior Congress MP Pramod Tiwari—represents a dual attempt by the party to consolidate Brahmin and women voters across the state. Alongside her appointment, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) unveiled a multi-tiered state leadership team designed to appeal to key electoral demographics:
| Role | Appointee | Demographics / Focus |
| UPCC President | Aradhana Misra | Brahmin / Women Representation |
| Working President | Imran Masood (Rajya Sabha MP) | Muslim Representation |
| CLP Leader | Chaudhary Virendra Singh | Legislative Strategy |
| Senior Vice Presidents | Devinder Nishad & Alok Prasad | OBC & Lower Caste Outreach |
| AICC State In-Charge | Rajendra Pal Gautam | Dalit Outreach |
Despite the balanced organizational setup, Misra rejected claims of identity-based politics. “The Congress has never played the politics of caste, religion, and community, nor will it ever do so,” Misra stated, adding that the new team aims to build a “strong alternative for 2027.”
Seat-Sharing Negotiations and SP Relations
Misra’s most immediate hurdle will be managing seat-sharing negotiations with SP President Akhilesh Yadav. While the Congress seeks an expanded contestation footprint, the Samajwadi Party maintains that its dominant organizational machinery makes it the primary challenger to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Addressing party dynamics within the INDIA bloc, Misra offered an optimistic outlook on alliance cohesion:
“The Samajwadi Party is a partner of ours in the INDIA bloc, and a strong one at that… In 2024, the BJP was stopped on this land of Uttar Pradesh by the INDIA bloc. This alliance is strong and effective, and we will take it forward with full strength in 2027.”
During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the combined opposition alliance secured 43 of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 parliamentary seats, halting the BJP’s national momentum. However, recent friction between mid-level leaders from both parties has heightened the political stakes surrounding upcoming state assembly seat allocations.
