MUMBAI — Global sports apparel and footwear powerhouse Nike has strengthened its specialized marketing division in India, appointing sports management professional Karan Kulkarni as Senior Specialist, Sports Marketing – Olympics & Growth.
The strategic appointment comes as Nike scales up its high-performance athlete partnerships, grassroots sports ecosystems, and growth-focused initiatives in the Indian market ahead of major global sporting events.
A Strategic Mandate for Global and Domestic Growth
Kulkarni announced his transition via a LinkedIn update, describing the move to the iconic brand as a long-standing career aspiration.
“Nike has always represented ambition, courage, innovation, and the belief that anything is possible when you dare to push your limits. Becoming part of the iconic Swoosh family is both humbling and exciting,” Kulkarni stated, acknowledging the support of regional leadership executives Adrian Bell, Tarundeep Singh, Abhishek Wakankar, and Scott Braun.
In his new role, Kulkarni’s primary mandate will center on leveraging high-profile athlete endorsements, developing specialized marketing campaigns centered on the Olympic framework, and building long-term growth pipelines to enhance Nike’s brand premium and footprint in India’s rapidly expanding multisport ecosystem.
Track Record Across India’s Marquee Sporting Properties
Kulkarni brings over five years of concentrated expertise spanning sports event management, media partnerships, elite athlete sales, and fan engagement frameworks. His career has been heavily anchored around some of India’s most commercially successful sporting leagues, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), Indian Super League (ISL), and the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
Prior to joining Nike, Kulkarni’s professional trajectory included impactful stints across major sports marketing and media networks:
-
FUSE (Omnicom Media Group): Served as Group Head – Sports, where he led specialized brand-sports integrations and media activations.
-
RISE Worldwide: Handled Sports Partnerships, working within the core team serving as exclusive agents for marquee cricket franchises like the Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. During this tenure, he facilitated high-impact brand collaborations for consumer names such as boAt, Mondelez, FanCode, and Confirmtkt.
-
ITW Consulting: Served as Assistant Manager – Sports Sponsorships, executing localized commercial sports partnerships.
-
Women’s CricZone: Worked as Manager – Growth & Partnerships, driving visibility and corporate backing for the rising women’s cricket media space.
Nike’s decision to onboard specialized domestic talent underlines the brand’s intent to aggressively back its sports marketing bench strength in India, transitioning from traditional cricket-centric focus areas to an all-inclusive portfolio encompassing athletics, lifestyle sports, and Olympic disciplines.
