NEW DELHI — A fierce war of words erupted between Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and former Union Minister Smriti Irani during a parliamentary debate on the Women’s Quota Bill. The exchange, which blended political criticism with personal barbs, centered on Irani’s television background and Yadav’s political lineage.
The row began when Yadav, while supporting the bill, took a swipe at Irani’s 2024 electoral defeat in Amethi. Referring to her iconic TV role, he remarked, “Your ‘Saas-Bahu’ girl lost,” suggesting that reserved constituencies might only heighten rivalries between women.
The Counter-Attack
Smriti Irani took to X (formerly Twitter) to deliver a sharp rebuttal, framing Yadav as a beneficiary of nepotism:
-
On Merit vs. Legacy: Irani noted it was “ironic” that those who “inherited politics as a legacy” were commenting on self-made women.
-
On Professionalism: “Shift your focus away from TV serials and direct it towards Parliament,” she posted, adding that those who have never held a job should not criticize working women.
The Quota Debate Escalates
Beyond the personal spat, Yadav accused the BJP of using women as mere political slogans (“Nari ko Naara”). He challenged the ruling party to reveal how many of their 21 governed states feature women Chief Ministers.
The debate also touched on the Caste Census, with Yadav demanding immediate implementation to ensure backward communities receive fair representation within the quota. In response, Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that the Census process has begun and assured the House that a caste-based census would indeed be conducted.
The verbal duel highlights the high stakes and deep ideological rift surrounding the implementation of women’s reservation in India.
