KARUR — In a major rehabilitation initiative following one of the most severe public tragedies in the state’s recent history, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Friday distributed compassionate appointment orders to the family members of the victims of the Karur stampede.
Describing the incident as an “unhealed wound” that continues to cause him immense mental anguish, the Chief Minister handed over job orders to one eligible member from each of the 32 affected families at a state function held at the Atlas Arena in Karur. The designations were tailored to the educational qualifications of the beneficiaries.
Judicial Nuance and Temporary Postings
The distribution ceremony coincided with ongoing legal proceedings before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, where a petition has challenged the state government’s initial executive decision to grant permanent government jobs to the victims’ next of kin.
Interim directions issued by the High Court permitted the government to proceed with the rehabilitation rollout for the time being, provided the beneficiaries are offered temporary appointments pending the final disposal of the case.
Direct Political Response and Policy Pledges
The tragedy, which occurred on September 27 last year during a TVK election campaign rally on the eve of the assembly polls, claimed the lives of 41 people. A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the structural failures that caused the stampede remains active.
Following the disaster, the state government had sanctioned an ex-gratia relief package of ₹10 lakh per family, which was supplemented by an additional financial assistance of ₹20 lakh from the TVK party funds.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Vijay strongly pushed back against the opposition’s political criticism surrounding the event:
“They pinned the blame on me for the Karur incident, but I entered politics for the sake of the people, and I am determined to bring a permanent end to such tragedies.”
The Chief Minister also targeted the opposition benches for staging walkouts during legislative debates on party funds, claiming that systemic corruption has faced sharp reductions under his current administration. Furthermore, he reiterated his cabinet’s commitment to implementing all welfare promises, including the proposed scheme to gift gold rings to newborns on the birth anniversary of former CM C.N. Annadurai.
