In a significant late-night development on December 22, 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the premature repatriation of Sadanand Vasant Date, Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), to his parent cadre, Maharashtra. The move comes at the specific request of the Maharashtra government. Mr. Date, a 1990-batch IPS officer and a celebrated hero of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is widely expected to succeed Rashmi Shukla as the next Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra, whose tenure concludes on December 31, 2025.
