NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a high-stakes, six-day diplomatic tour of Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. The six-day visit, spanning July 6 to 11, 2026, marks a concerted push to expand India’s strategic footprint, maritime security, and economic collaboration across the critical Indo-Pacific corridor.
In his official departure statement, PM Modi highlighted that the tour is designed to actively advance India’s “Act East” policy, its MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions), and its overarching alignment toward a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
1. Indonesia: Consolidating Maritime Ties (July 6–8)
The first leg of the tour takes the Prime Minister to Jakarta at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This visit holds profound historical and symbolic weight, aligning with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Indonesia.
-
Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: This marks PM Modi’s first bilateral visit to Indonesia since ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018. It also reciprocates President Prabowo’s high-profile state visit to India as the Chief Guest for Republic Day in January 2025.
-
Key Agendas: High-level bilateral discussions will center on trade, investments, digital technologies, healthcare, space, connectivity, and defense operations.
-
Cultural Diplomacy: Alongside standard bureaucratic engagements and an address to the local Indian diaspora, PM Modi and President Prabowo are scheduled to visit the historic Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta, a UNESCO World Heritage site showcasing deep civilizational ties.
2. Australia: Critical Minerals & Economic Integration (July 8–10)
From Indonesia, PM Modi will travel south to Melbourne, Australia, to co-chair the Annual Leaders’ Summit alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
-
Economic Cooperation: Negotiations will look to fast-track the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) to aggressively deepen mutual trade and cross-border investment parameters.
-
Defense & Tech: Key focus areas will target strategic defense cooperation, critical minerals supply chains, clean energy transit, and emerging tech.
-
Industry & Diaspora: PM Modi will engage with major industrial players at the India-Australia CEOs Forum, meet Governor-General Ms. Sam Mostyn AC, and address Australia’s rapidly growing Indian diaspora population.
3. New Zealand: A Historic First in Decades (July 10–11)
The final leg of the tour concludes in Auckland, marking a historic milestone as the first state visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in over four decades.
-
Bilateral Momentum: Building on New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s trip to India in March 2025, the leaders will review a highly accelerated roadmap focused heavily on commercial trade and defense.
-
Sector Expansion: Talks will target agriculture, education, technology, renewable energy, sports, and formalizing seamless labor mobility frameworks.
The Strategic Takeaway: This multi-nation sweep directly underlines New Delhi’s shifting geopolitical priorities. By interlocking agreements with an ASEAN anchor (Indonesia), a pivotal Quad ally (Australia), and a key Pacific partner (New Zealand), India is actively positioning itself as a primary stabilizer of supply chain resilience and maritime security in the southern hemisphere.
