CHENNAI — The political deadlock in Tamil Nadu has intensified as the ruling DMK lashed out at actor-turned-politician Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), following his premature bid to stake a claim for government formation.
With the state currently suspended in a high-stakes legislative limbo, DMK leaders have advised the superstar-politician to focus on securing actual floor support rather than rushing to the Raj Bhavan.
The Numbers Game
At the heart of the crisis is the 118-seat majority mark in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Vijay’s TVK currently finds itself in a precarious position:
-
Current Standing: The TVK and its immediate allies are reportedly stuck at 112 seats.
-
The Discrepancy: DMK leader TKS Elangovan pointed out that while TVK initially held 107 seats, their attempt to form a coalition backfired when the numbers failed to reach an absolute majority.
-
The Single-Largest Party Argument: Elangovan suggested that had Vijay approached the Governor as the single largest party, he might have been invited to form a government. However, by presenting a coalition that still falls short, he has effectively invited a stalemate.
Allegations of “Forged” Support
The drama took a sharp turn into legal territory following a public spat with the AMMK.
Vijay’s camp initially claimed they had the support of TTV Dhinakaran’s AMMK, even presenting a signed letter from an MLA-elect. However, Dhinakaran has since accused the TVK of forgery, claiming the letter was fabricated. The TVK has vehemently denied these charges, accusing the AMMK chief of spreading misinformation.
“There is a complaint filed,” Elangovan remarked regarding the forgery allegations. “If their MLA is not supporting him, why submit such a letter to the Governor? It is fundamentally wrong.”
A State in Suspense
While Vijay currently enjoys the backing of the Congress and the CPM, his path to power remains blocked by a few critical holdouts:
-
The Rejections: Both the AMMK and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have officially withdrawn from potential backing.
-
The VCK Factor: All eyes are now on VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan. Sources suggest a meeting between Vijay and Thirumavalavan is scheduled for later today, a sit-down that could decide the fate of the next government.
As the “stardom-like” momentum of Vijay’s political debut hits the hard reality of coalition arithmetic, Tamil Nadu remains on edge, waiting to see if the TVK can bridge the six-seat gap or if the state is headed toward a different political alignment.
