NEW DELHI — Veteran tech journalist Debashish Sarkar has returned to CNN-News18, taking over as the network’s new Technology Editor effective July 2026. This marks a homecoming for Sarkar, who previously managed the channel’s personal technology and gaming portfolios.
A Familiar Newsroom Return
Sarkar is well-acquainted with the Network18 ecosystem. He previously served as the Editor of Technology at CNN-News18 from November 2021 to March 2024. During his prior tenure, he spearheaded the editorial roadmap for News18 Tech and successfully managed the network’s 1UP Gaming digital asset.
Before his initial stint as editor, his early career included a foundational role at the network as a senior copy editor from 2016 to 2018, during which he hosted the popular ‘The Tech and Auto Show.’
A Decade of Editorial Leadership
Sarkar’s career spans over ten years across some of India’s biggest digital and print newsrooms, showcasing a diverse background in enterprise IT, consumer gadgetry, and policy editing.
He began his career covering enterprise tech and cybersecurity at EFY and 9.9 Media, before moving to The Indian Express as a senior sub-editor in 2014. He later served as a senior sub-editor at TOI Tech/Gadgets Now in 2016. Between 2018 and 2021, he worked as a Principal Digital Content Producer at The Times of India, where he reported heavily on startup ecosystems, consumer electronics, and enterprise IT for Gadgets Now, TimesofIndia.com, and The Economic Times.
Recent Strategic Experience
Prior to stepping back into CNN-News18, Sarkar spent two years as the Tech Editor at HT Digital Streams (March 2024 – March 2026). In that capacity, he directed the end-to-end editorial and affiliate strategy for HT Tech and managed daily consumer product and appliance coverage for LiveMint.com, alongside leading tech video production and social media content pipelines.
Most recently, starting in April 2026, he served as an Editorial Consultant for Verve Research. There, he pivoted into academic and policy-level content, copyediting and fact-checking complex chapters concerning global artificial intelligence (AI) governance, critical minerals, climate justice, and strategic autonomy from a Southeast Asian lens.
A first-class Mass Communication graduate from Guru Jambheshwar University—where he originally founded the student newspaper The Nation Express—Sarkar returns to television and digital media to guide CNN-News18’s technical and consumer electronics reporting through the evolving AI era.
