CHENNAI: Shaking the foundations of both regional and national coalitions, the DMK has officially severed ties with the national INDIA alliance. The dramatic exit came less than 24 hours after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s ruling Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) allocated its first-ever Rajya Sabha seat to the Congress, a move that the DMK labeled as political capitulation.
The strategic cross-party maneuver formalizes a growing, high-stakes alliance between the newly formed TVK government and the Congress in Tamil Nadu, structurally isolating the DMK following its historic assembly election defeat.
The Post-Election Compact
The decision to hand over the lone vacant Upper House seat to a national party—defying strong internal pressure from TVK cadres who wanted a homegrown nominee—is a direct reflection of “coalition dharma” following the political shakeup.
After falling just short of a majority on its own, Vijay’s TVK successfully formed the state government with critical outside support from newly elected Congress MLAs. To cement this post-election pact, Chief Minister Vijay personally backed the official nomination of senior Congress functionary Praveen Chakravarthy for the parliamentary seat.
The nomination represents a major political debut for Chakravarthy, a close data-strategist to Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, who has been instrumental in aligning the national party with Vijay’s fresh governance roadmap.
DMK Pulls the Plug, Fires Brackets at TVK
Lashing out at what it perceives as betrayal by its longtime national partner, the DMK announced its immediate departure from the opposition bloc just ahead of the apex INDIA alliance meeting in New Delhi. Party leaders openly stated that the Congress’s tactical shifts had deeply alienated regional grassroots cadres.
Simultaneously, the DMK aimed a sharp ideological critique at TVK, accusing the actor-turned-politician of surrendering the legislative seat to avoid entering a direct parliamentary confrontation with the BJP:
“If you go to the Rajya Sabha, you’ll have to take a stand on every issue. More importantly, you’ll have to oppose the BJP directly. That’s the only reason no member from TVK was sent to the Rajya Sabha.” — Saravanan, DMK Spokesperson
Reordering the Southern Peninsula
While the exit of a heavyweight regional party like the DMK deals a severe mathematical blow to the INDIA alliance at a national level, Congress strategists believe the emerging axis with the TVK will re-energize anti-incumbency momentum across the south.
Though TVK has not formally signed onto the national alliance framework yet, the joint legislative coordination indicates a long-term electoral understanding. Commenting on the transition, TVK Joint General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar noted that the Chief Minister will evaluate the evolving federal dynamics before taking an official national front call.
