DEHRADUN: Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and veteran BJP leader, Major General (Retd.) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, passed away on Tuesday at Max Hospital in Dehradun following a prolonged illness. He was 91.
A distinguished military officer who successfully transitioned into statecraft, General Khanduri served two terms as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand (first from 2007 to 2009, and again from 2011 to 2012). He was widely respected for bringing military discipline into public administration, implementing stringent anti-corruption measures, and championing a transparent, clean governance model in the hill state.
An Irreparable Loss to Indian Politics
Expressing deep sorrow over the veteran leader’s demise, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami termed it an irreparable loss to both the state and national politics.
“During his tenure in the Indian Army, Shri Khanduri set an unparalleled example of national service, discipline, and dedication,” CM Dhami said in an official statement. “From his military career to his public life, his persona remained steadfastly devoted to national interest. He established a strong legacy defined by development, good governance, and an honest work ethic.”
CM Dhami added that General Khanduri’s simplicity, candor, and administrative efficiency earned him a special place in the hearts of the people of Uttarakhand, praying for strength for his bereaved family to bear the profound grief.
