INDORE — Senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has triggered a massive political controversy following public remarks involving the term “Kafir” (unbeliever) directed at members of the Muslim community.
The opposition Congress has vehemently condemned the statement, accusing the veteran politician of deploying divisive rhetoric that compromises constitutional values and democratic norms.
The Controversial Remarks in Indore
The incident unfolded on Sunday during an official public address in Indore’s Assembly Constituency No. 1. While announcing civic infrastructure upgrades worth ₹2.39 crore—including road cementing and drainage networks across Wards 1 and 5—the minister explicitly addressed the local demographic makeup.
Reflecting on local political dynamics, Vijayvargiya stated:
“Roads are being built here. Both Hindu and Muslim brothers live here. Many Muslim brothers call us ‘Kafirs’. If we are Kafirs, then do not walk on the roads we build. If money from the Ladli Behna or Ladli Lakshmi schemes is reaching your homes, then do not accept it.”
Balancing Rhetoric with Party Policy
Immediately following the contentious remarks, Vijayvargiya attempted to temper his delivery by invoking the Bharatiya Janata Party’s central governance slogan, insisting that public administration remains blind to religious lines:
-
Claim of Non-Discrimination: The minister emphasized that the state apparatus executes public works without communal bias, quoting the Prime Minister’s motto: “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.”
-
Fiduciary Responsibility: He asserted that serving the electorate remains his ultimate duty regardless of voting patterns, remarking, “Whether people vote for us or not, serving the public is our responsibility. Development work will continue regardless of political support.”
Congress Mounts Sharp Counterattack
The statement drew sharp rebukes from the opposition benches, with Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar leading the criticism. Singhar accused the minister of exhibiting an “arrogance of power” and fundamentally misunderstanding the nature of public finance.
“Roads are built from public funds, not from the resources of any political party. Linking development works to religion exposes the hollowness of BJP’s claims of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.’ The statement made by a minister from a public platform is not only objectionable but also raises serious concerns regarding constitutional morality.”
A History of Verbal Flashpoints
The development adds to a documented history of polarizing statements from Vijayvargiya, particularly concerning social behavior and public conduct:
-
June 2025: Sparked a widespread political row in Indore during a World Environment Day address after criticizing women wearing “skimpy, western clothes,” stating it was a foreign concept of beauty out of touch with Indian traditions.
-
Previous Rows: Faced severe blowback for comparing modern clothing trends among youth to characters from the epic Ramayana, alongside frequent public verbal jousts with Congress leadership.
