New Delhi — OpenAI has quietly updated its advertising policies to bar competing generative AI companies from running ad campaigns for image- and audio-generation products within ChatGPT, according to a recent report by The Information.
The unannounced policy shift came to light after OpenAI notified advertising partners that standalone image and voice-generation tools would no longer be approved for promotion. Doug Wyatt, Senior Director for Americas Media at Adobe, confirmed the communications to media outlets. Adobe had previously utilized OpenAI’s initial advertising pilot to promote its Firefly AI image generator and Acrobat Studio.
Expanding In-House Capabilities and Restrictions
The policy update coincides with OpenAI’s aggressive push into matching product categories, notably marked by the rollout of ChatGPT Images 2.5 and ChatGPT Live voice capabilities. Currently, the restriction is constrained to image and audio tools, leaving ads for video-generation products permitted on the platform.
Beyond paid placements, the platform has reportedly halted outbound citations and external links for action-oriented image queries—such as searches for photo editors or third-party image generators—effectively tightening organic discovery pathways.
Balancing Revenue and Competition
Building out ChatGPT’s advertising division serves as a crucial revenue stream alongside subscriptions, especially given that a majority of the platform’s over one billion monthly users remain on free tiers. Industry projections suggest OpenAI is targeting an annualized advertising revenue run rate reaching into the billions of dollars.
While restricting direct competitors is a standard practice among major digital platforms, analysts note the move exposes a growing tension: OpenAI acts simultaneously as a dominant consumer gatekeeper and a direct market rival to the companies seeking access to its massive user base. Industry watchers are monitoring whether the restrictions will soon expand to cover video-generation and other competing categories.
