NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has etched his name into the annals of Indian political history by becoming the longest-serving elected prime minister of the country. On Wednesday, PM Modi achieved an unbroken tenure of 4,399 days in office, surpassing the record previously held by India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
While Jawaharlal Nehru served as prime minister for a total of 16 years and 286 days starting from independence in 1947, his tenure as an elected prime minister following India’s first institutionalized general elections in 1952 spanned 4,398 days (from May 13, 1952, until his demise on May 27, 1964). PM Modi, who was first elected in 2014, has now exceeded that milestone in a single, continuous stretch.
Senior BJP leaders and Union Cabinet ministers flooded social media with congratulations, praising PM Modi’s 12 years of transformative leadership. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the Prime Minister as a “tireless Karmayogi,” stating that this landmark achievement is a testament to the enduring trust reposed in his leadership by the citizens of India.
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal termed it a “historic day,” highlighting that under the Modi administration, grassroots-level reforms have empowered farmers, MSMEs, women, and the youth, while significantly elevating India’s stature on the global stage. Adding to the praise, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal emphasized the Prime Minister’s role in expanding welfare schemes, maintaining sound economic pillars, and steering the nation closer to a $5 trillion economy while safeguarding national security.
With this milestone, the ruling dispensation reiterated its commitment to PM Modi’s overarching vision of transforming India into a fully developed nation—Viksit Bharat—by 2047.
