AGARTALA – In a decisive mandate for regional identity, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), led by Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, swept the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections on Friday. The party secured a massive 24 out of 28 seats, leaving its state-level ally, the BJP, with just four.
Mandate for Indigenous Rights
Despite being allies in the Tripura state government, the TMP and BJP contested the council polls separately. The results indicate a significant shift in the political landscape of the state’s tribal belt.
Pradyot Debbarma characterized the victory as a “complete whitewash,” stating that voters had decisively rejected adversarial politics. “The message is unambiguous,” Debbarma said. “The people have rejected a particular point of view represented at the highest level against the indigenous population.”
Strained Alliances
The campaign was marked by heightened tensions between the two parties. Debbarma noted that while his community and family faced personal attacks during the trail, his party maintained its dignity. He also took a direct swipe at the state BJP leadership, including Chief Minister Manik Saha, suggesting that voters chose “commitment over convenience.”
Key Takeaways
-
Landslide Win: TMP wins 24 seats; BJP reduced to 4.
-
Constitutional Focus: Debbarma framed the win not as a grab for power, but as a struggle for constitutional guarantees regarding land, identity, and political rights.
-
Political Outreach: Following the results, Debbarma confirmed receiving outreach from various parties, including the BJP, but declined to share details of those private conversations.
This victory solidifies the Tipra Motha Party’s role as the primary voice for Tripura’s indigenous communities, setting the stage for a complex re-evaluation of its alliance with the BJP ahead of future state and national contests.
