CHANDIGARH — Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has dismissed mounting speculation surrounding a recent high-profile gathering at the residence of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, firmly asserting that the event is not a sign of factionalism or groupism within the state unit.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Warring downplayed rumors of internal division while simultaneously issuing a strict warning that public statements undermining party discipline would face severe consequences.
“No Factionalism”: Warring Defends Leader Gatherings
Addressing the media coverage surrounding the meeting, Warring clarified that senior leaders and party workers regularly meet, and such interactions should not be misinterpreted as a rebellion or political alignment against the current leadership.
“Charanjit Singh Channi is a senior Congress leader, our colleague, and a former chief minister. People gathering at his house or at my house does not mean there is infighting,” Warring stated. “Differences, if any, can be resolved by sitting together.”
The Punjab party chief also addressed reports of some local leaders speaking out against his leadership, warning that while senior figures like Channi had remained well within party lines, anyone crossing the limits of discipline—including former MLAs—would face strict disciplinary action.
Direct Access to the Congress High Command
Responding to questions about Channi’s political maneuvering, Warring emphasized that a leader of Channi’s stature needs no special authorization to communicate with national leadership. He noted that Rahul Gandhi holds genuine affection for Channi, who remains free to meet the central high command at any time.
He also pointed out that upcoming visits by senior national leaders, including Bhupesh Baghel, would offer ample opportunities for state leaders to coordinate directly with the central team ahead of the election cycle.
Key Policy & Election Clarifications
As the party gears up for its upcoming electoral campaign, Warring provided updates on several critical fronts:
-
Campaign Unity: Rejecting claims of deeply entrenched camps, Warring assured that the entire Punjab Congress would stand fully united on the ground. “We have only one mission — to win the elections,” he asserted.
-
Ticket Distribution: While the state leadership will draft and recommend the roster of candidates, Warring made it clear that the final decision rests entirely with the Congress high command.
-
Chief Ministerial Face: When pressed on whether the party would project a CM candidate, Warring deferred completely to national leadership, stating he stands firmly by whatever decision Rahul Gandhi and the central committee choose to make.
-
Sukhjinder Randhawa’s Meeting with Amit Shah: Addressing speculation over senior leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa meeting with the Union Home Minister, Warring noted that Randhawa had already clarified the discussion was strictly institutional and centered around the law and order situation in Punjab.
Defending Balkaur Singh’s Visit
Warring also deflected controversy regarding a visit by Balkaur Singh, the father of the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, to Channi’s residence.
Terming the meeting completely natural, Warring added that there was nothing objectionable about it. He went a step further, suggesting that Congress leaders who had not yet visited should do so to congratulate Channi on his recent appointment as the Chairman of the Election Campaign Committee.
